Fortnite: Learn to Build Tips – The right keybinding makes all the difference
Changes the key assignment: In the standard assignment of Fortnite, you call up the construction menu with Q, or use the F1-F4 keys to place individual building parts. In this setting, building takes an unnecessary amount of time and, above all, the buttons are often difficult to reach with your fingers. So you should change your keyboard layout in Fortnite a little if possible in order to get to the right parts faster when building.
Each component should be as close as possible to your keyboard fingers. There is no universal setting, all Fortnite players are a little different. Fortnite streamer Ninja and Fortnite world champion Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf have already made their personal key assignments public.
object | ninja | bugha |
Wall | R | X |
floor | E | V |
Stairs | Q | C |
roof | mouse button 5 | shift left |
Jump | spacebar | spacebar |
To use | mouse wheel | E/Mouse wheel up |
reload | C | R/G |
To edit | V | F/Mouse wheel down |
Duck | shift left | Ctrl left |
So while one of the two builds more on the keys directly above and around WASD, the other relies more on the keys underneath. Just try these two settings for yourself to see which one suits you better. However, you can also customize the key assignments in Fortnite to your own preferences at any time, the main thing is that your fingers don’t have to clench to F1-F4 again and again.
Once you’ve found a key assignment that you like, it’s time to let it become second nature. You could acquire them simply by playing a few rounds of Battle Royale in Fortnite. But if you want to practice without constant worry about enemy fire, take advantage of creative mode. Here you can practice as you please on an empty map, or even find special practice maps from the community. We show you a few of them here:

Fortnite: Learn to build tips – The most important techniques for Battle Royale
Learn the most important techniques: Once you’ve internalized which keys you use and how to build, it’s time to learn some proper building techniques. In recent years, a few particularly effective techniques have emerged that can bring you important advantages in Fortnite.
The right staircase: In Fortnite’s Battle Royale, building is often about who has the high ground advantage. Of course, the fastest way to reach this is by stairs. But if you only put stairs next to stairs, your opponents can quickly bring down the stairs. So a staircase needs to be protected. The best way to do this is to place each staircase on an angle of floor and wall, which gives additional protection from below. The order is stair, floor, wall; which is why the technique is often called that.
The 90: This technique got its name because you make a 90 degree turn each time you build the structure. Put simply, the structure consists of two walls touching each other and a floor below, on which you build a staircase. Once you have the technique down, you can build a spiral staircase up to the sky in a very short time. Pictures explain the technology best, so we have found a video for you here:
If you have mastered these two techniques, you are one step closer to becoming a pro builder in Fortnite. Again and again, take the time to practice the techniques in creative mode so that the movement sequences become second nature. You still have plenty of time for training until the end of Season 4 in Fortnite.

Build before you shoot: When you’re not playing Fortnite’s zero-build mode, building structures quickly and in a coordinated manner is a priority in duels. Ideally, you’ve already built your buildings and spotted an enemy from there before attempting to target him or her. The Fortnite battle royale is decided on defense and whoever has better cover usually wins the duel. Even if you want to go offensively towards an opponent, never do so without cover.

Have enough material on stock: No matter how good you can build, if you don’t have the material to hand, even the fastest fingers won’t do anything. Always make sure you keep your resources up properly and stock up whenever you can. Nothing is more unpleasant than running out of wood/stone/metal in the middle of a fight and therefore giving up. Pay particular attention to smaller fences and hedges in settlements, which give you a relatively large amount of wood for little effort.
Does not completely dismantle trees: If you cut down a tree in the forest and everyone sees it, you’ll be riddled with bullets in no time. When farming resources, make sure that you don’t cut down trees completely, but at least leave a blow. This way you avoid being discovered too quickly when farming and many resources won’t go to waste with the last hit anyway.
