Unlock weapons in CoD: Modern Warfare 2 – here’s how
The biggest change compared to Modern Warfare (2019) concerns the way you unlocked new weapons in multiplayer mode. While you still unlock some weapons with simple account leveling up, unlocking many new weapons works differently now.
Most guns belong to a specific weapons platform. To unlock more weapons on a platform, you must level up a specific weapon on that platform. You can find out which gun you need to level up by looking at locked weapons in the equipment menu.
The problem: The weapons on a platform are spread over several weapon types. So fall under the “Lachmann & Meer” platform for example an Assault Rifle, Battle Rifle, SMG, LMG, and DMR – their unlock conditions are all interdependent. This boils down to, say, leveling up a battle rifle to unlock an assault rifle.
Lachman SMG (MP5): How to Unlock One of the Best Weapons?
One of the Most powerful weapons in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the Lachmann MP for the release – better known as the MP5. Due to its long range and rate of fire, most assault rifles don’t stand a chance against this SMG. To unlock the Lachmann SMG, you need to level up the following weapons:
- “Lachmann-762” battle rifle at level 13 -> unlocks “Lachmann-556” assault rifle.
- Assault rifle “Lachmann-556” at level 12 -> unlocks the Lachmann SMG.
Tips for leveling weapons quickly
So that you can get to the Lachmann-MP as quickly as possible, we recommend the Invasion Mode to play. The special thing about the mode: In addition to enemy players, numerous bots regularly spawn here and bot kills also count towards leveling up your weapons.
The AI opponents are incredibly stupid and easy cannon fodder. Try to get as close to the enemy base as possible and position yourself near an AI spawn point. Now you can farm kills in peace. Just be careful not to get caught by a real opposing player.
Killstreaks or Scorestreaks?
In the 2019 predecessor, there were only killstreaks where you could summon gadgets like drones or an airstrike for a certain number of kills in one life. Killstreaks also return in Modern Warfare 2. However, you can now view the killstreaks with the push of a button in the menu change to point series.
Instead of kills, you unlock the series by collecting points. This is especially worthwhile in objective-based modes like dominion or position, where you get points by taking positions. Point streaks are also worthwhile for beginners, since you can unlock drones without having to land huge killstreaks.
The new extras explained and the best perks to start with
Perks have also been revamped in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. This is how you choose in your loadout now two basic extras, which are always active, plus a bonus perk and an ultimate perk. The latter two are only unlocked during the course of a match. The more kills you make, the quicker you’ll get the two extra perks.
At the beginning you hardly unlocked any extras, but you can Choose from six preset perk packs. We recommend you to take either the Assault or the Phantom pack.
That Assault Pack is particularly suitable for aggressive players. It consists of the following extras:
- Basic Extra: Overkill – Wield two primary weapons.
- Basic Extra: Looter – Get ammo replenishment and throwing knives from dead players.
- bonus extra: Hardliner – killstreaks cost one kill less. Scorestreak costs are reduced by 125.
- Ultimate Extra: Patch Up – Killing players directly triggers health regeneration. Capturing and holding targets increases health regeneration speed.
That Phantom Pack we recommend more cautious players. It consists of the following extras:
- Basic Extra: Battle Hardened – Decreases the effects of enemy flash, stun, EMP, and gas grenades, as well as shock staffs. Immune to snapshot grenades.
- Basic Extra: Rapid Speed – Doubles the duration of Tactical Dash. Increases crawl speed by 30 percent.
- bonus extra: In Cold Blood – Undetectable by AI target systems. Does not trigger the Alerted alert. Untagged by enemy Tactical Cameras, Recon Drones, and Scout Scopes.
- Ultimate Extra: Ghost – Undetectable by Drones, Wearable Radar, and Heartbeat Sensor.
Which field equipment is worthwhile at the beginning?
Field gears are small gadgets, of which you can equip one at the beginning and two later. They charge up during a match and can then be used.
At the beginning, the choice of field equipment is still very limited. So it’s best to use it Trophy systema defense system that destroys up to three pieces of enemy equipment such as grenades – perfect when you need to hold a point.
At level 10 you switch it portable radar free. Once placed, it pings nearby enemies on the minimap. Just like the Trophy system, this field gear comes in handy when you need to defend a position or want to watch your back for “strategic” camping.
Tips & Tricks for the graphics settings of CoD: MW2
Before you jump into the multiplayer battles, you should make a detour to the options menu of CoD: Modern Warfare 2. You can find them under Graphics > Details & Textures Motion blur settings. While these effects may look cool, they put you at a disadvantage in multiplayer, as they make it harder for you to see your enemies. Therefore switch the following options to “Off”:
- world motion blur
- Weapon motion blur
- depth of field
Enable 120 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X
If you’re playing MW2 on a PS5 or Xbox Series X and have a TV that supports 120 Hertz, you can Enable 120Hz refresh rate in game.
Opens the Graphics settings in the options menu. Under the “View” tab you will find the 120 Hz refresh rate setting. Once you’ve played at 120 FPS, you won’t want to go back. The game feels a lot smoother compared to the standard 60 Hertz mode.
