Steelrising Guide: What is the Best Starter Class?

Posted on October 3, 2022 By Community

in the Class Guide about Steelrising you can find out:

  • How the four classes differ
  • What starter weapon each class owns
  • What is the best starter class

Steelrising is a badass Soulslike, set at the time of the French Revolution. Dangerous automatons and obscure mechanical constructs rage in the steampunk game. You take on the role of a female automata to overthrow the power-hungry king and his vassals.

Important information about the starter classes

At the beginning of the game you can choose from four different starter classes: Bodyguard, soldier, dancer and alchemist. Your chosen class dictates what gear and stats you start with, but it doesn’t tie you to a particular playstyle.

You can switch to a different weapon type later in the game, or switch from a sluggish to a nimble character at any time. You don’t have to do without the other starter weapons either: you can buy them at any time in the boutique for a handful of essence.

All starter classes at a glance

bodyguard

  • Good at: defense
  • Value Bonuses: Robustness +3 | Construction +2
  • Starter Weapon: polemic

How does the bodyguard play?

The bodyguard has a clear focus on defense. The points on robustness increase your general life points and strengthen yours balance. Balance determines how easily you are knocked over and interrupted by enemies. The improved construction value increases yours armor and the loot multiplier.

How does the starter weapon play?

Polemic is a heavy warhammer that converts into a Sign transformed. The slow weapon has a lot of power. The higher your power, the easier it is for you to knock opponents off their feet. With Polemic you can easily deal with enemy hordes, since you can simply knock over the smaller opponents.

How should I distribute my attribute points?

Invest the next points in power to increase your weapon damage. You should also invest a few points in vigor so that you have more stamina reserves.

soldier

  • Good at: Attack, heavy weapons
  • Value Bonuses: Power +3 | panache +2
  • Starter Weapon: Gribeauval halberd

How does the soldier play?

As a soldier, you start with three points on your strength value. In Steelrising, weapons scale with either Power or Agility. Power weapons are slower, but deal more damage per swing and have a high Rush stat. Choose the soldier if you big guns like maces and spears. Elan increases your stamina and makes it easier to stun enemies.

How does the starter weapon play?

The Gribeauval halberd is a polearm with very large range. With this weapon you have the advantage that you can hit opponents from a safe distance without being hit yourself. The special technique goes even further and transforms your halberd into one musket. Enemies can be knocked over and disrupted with a single powerful shot.

How should I distribute my attribute points?

In any case, invest the first points in robustness to increase your chances of survival. You should put all other points in vigor and strength.

dancer

  • Good at: Assault, light weapons
  • Value Bonuses: Agility +3 | panache +2
  • Starter Weapon: Armored fan

How does the dancer play?

As a counterpart to the soldier, the dancer concentrates on wielding light weapons. She trades power for speed and dives under enemy attacks with her high stamina reserves. Choose the dancer if you fast weapons like claws, double swords or fans.

The Dancer relies on the Agility attribute, which improves damage with light weapons and increases stun damage. The more stun damage you cause, the faster the diamond symbol in the opponent’s torso fills up. If the icon is filled, the enemy is stunned and open to a critical hit.

How does the starter weapon play?

With the armored fan you strike at lightning speed. The fast attacks allow controlled maneuvers and reactions to enemy attacks. The special technique allows you to use the fan as a protective shield to use. If you transform the fan into a shield, you will be unable to move and can only block the damage in front of you.

How should I distribute my attribute points?

Put the first 3 points into sturdiness to get a little more life. Then you invest 5 points in panache and the rest in agility.

alchemist

  • Good at: Alchemy Damage and Resistance, Finding Loot
  • Value Bonuses: Elemental Alchemy +3 | Construction +2
  • Starter Weapon: Glass core billets

How does the alchemist play?

The alchemist is by far the best most difficult class. As an alchemist you use alchemical weapons, which apply elemental conditions to the opponent and deal Fire, Frost, or Lightning damage. Weapons scale with Elemental Alchemy stat and either Agility or Power.

Almost all opponents in Steelrising own elemental resistances. It’s quite possible that you’ll face a boss where you can’t get any further with your main weapon. For this reason, you should always carry two weapons of different elements.

Consume your weapon’s special techniques that allow you to build up elemental states Alchemy Capsules. If you run out of capsules, you lose a large part of your power. Alchemy Capsules can be purchased at any time in the boutique or looted from dead enemies. The higher your construction value, the higher the chance of finding loot.

How does the starter weapon play?

The Glass Core Clubs are two fast, short-range Tonfas. The special technique covers the weapon with frost for one minute. If you attack an opponent with it, you build his frost bar on. If the frost bar is full, the enemy will be frozen and unable to move for a few seconds.

How should I distribute my attribute points?

At the beginning of the game we recommend you put 3 points in robustness and 3 points in vigor. Then you increase elemental alchemy to 10 and construction to 5. Then decide whether you prefer to play heavy and fast weapons and invest points in either strength or agility.

Which starter class should I play?

If you want to familiarize yourself with the basic mechanics first, or haven’t played that many Soulslikes yet, you should soldier Select. The soldier starts with an enormously powerful weapon and should get you through the first few hours of the game without any problems.

For more seasoned Soulslike veterans, we definitely recommend the alchemist. The Alchemist has a unique feel that sets her apart from all other starter classes.
